Bourguignon Jean Pierre
Professor
Jean-Pierre Bourguignon
Jean-Pierre Bourguignon’s main field of research is differential geometry, particularly in its connections with partial differential equations and mathematical physics. He has shown a special interest in Ricci curvature, both in its mathematical aspects and in its role within general relativity.
A former student of the École Polytechnique and Doctor of Science, he joined the CNRS in 1969. He was seconded to the École Polytechnique, where he served as Professor from 1986 to 1994, and directed its Mathematics Center from 1990 to 1994.
From 1990 to 1992, he served as President of the Société Mathématique de France (French Mathematical Society).
From 1994 until September 2013, he was Director of the Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques (IHES).
Between 1994 and 1998, he served as the second President of the European Mathematical Society (EMS).
On November 25, 2013, he was appointed President of the European Research Council (ERC), a position he held until December 31, 2019. He was recalled to serve as interim President from late July 2020.
